Austin Public Library receives book money
from Earth Science Week Consortium

Earth Science Week October 7-13, 2001

This year the Austin Public Library will receive $2,000 from the Earth Science Week Consortium to buy earth science books for children of middle-school age. The books will be distributed among two to three locations of the Library system with a need in this subject matter and age group.

"New earth science books will help many students with school assignments and, hopefully, inspire a few young people to consider careers in geology, ecology, and other earth sciences," says APL Youth Services Manager Jeanette Larson. "This gift will help update a vital and important section of our youth materials collection."

This generous gift will be presented to the Austin Public Library at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, 10100 Burnet Road. The presentation is part of a Career Day Fair, where they will host over 600 middle school students of Austin and the surrounding areas.

Earth Science Week (ESW) is a nationwide program designed to promote interest and knowledge of the earth sciences and its contributions to society. It is an annual celebration sponsored by the American Geological Institute.

ESW 2001 will be celebrated nationwide the week of October 7-13, 2001. The Texas ESW consortium encourages you to use the Web site at http://www.beg.utexas.edu/esw/ to discover past and future ESW activities as well as the resources available to teachers, students, and the public.

The Austin ESW Consortium is a group of volunteers from city and government agencies, museums, nature centers, universities, and industries that work together to sponsor earth science celebrations in Austin.
