PAST NEWS ARCHIVE Mental Illness Awareness Week The first week of October each year is designated as Mental Illness Awareness Week. It is a time to make special efforts to raise the awareness of mental illness. This year in partnership with the Austin Mental Health Planning Partnership, the Austin Public Library will provide reading lists, book displays and other materials for the public to view and pick up from neighborhood branches. The Austin Area Mental Health Planning Partnership is comprised of providers of services that address the needs of persons with mental health issues as well as mental health consumers. Their purpose is to increase community awareness of mental health issues, assist in identifying needs and gaps in services, and promote best practices for services. The partnership is participating in Mental Illness Awareness week by distributing information to the public through libraries and bookstores and promoting local activities that are occurring throughout the week. Members of the partnership include: Austin Travis County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services, Seton/Shoal Creek Hospital, Mental Health Association, Family Eldercare, Advocacy Inc., Hill Country Counseling Services, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-Austin, Self Help Advocacy Center, Austin Area Mental Health Consumers, and Texas Rehabilitation Commission.
