University Hills Branch Library to Celebrate Jubilee on November 10

The University Hills Branch of the Austin Public Library, 4721 Loyola Lane, will hold its Jubilee celebration in honor of APL's 75th anniversary on Saturday, November 10, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Features will include Ballet Folklorico Mexikayotl, a children's and young adult performing troup that educates communities to the beauty of unique and colorful Mexican folk dances; the Celebration Dance Team of Believe in Me (comprised of 10- to 15-year-olds); and a Community Art Show, featuring local artists Laura Riddell, Larry Fennell, Ben Williams, Mary Solanik and others from the community.

The event is sponsored by the Austin Public Library Foundation and Grande Communications, Inc. Refreshments will be provided. The events are free and the public is invited to attend.

About University Hills Branch
University Hills Branch opened in Northeast Austin in 1986, with 8,000 square feet. The branch contains approximately 35,000 items, and provides seven public Internet terminals, two online public access terminals, and six Wired for Youth Internet terminals. The public service area has seating for 63 people. There are two meeting rooms, which can be combined and made into an auditorium seating over 100. Approximately 7,000 people visit the branch each month, checking out approximately 6,000 items.

Managing Librarian Frank Schmitzer says that his customers are a vibrant mix of cultures, with a predominately African American clientele. The branch has a large African American collection, a large video and CD collection, and a growing Spanish collection. Another feature is the VICTORY Homework Center, one of the busiest in the system, staffed by a full-time tutor coordinator.
