PAST NEWS ARCHIVE Give a Gift to Family and Community, Watch The Gifts of the Magi The Austin History Center Association invites the public to attend The Gifts of the Magi: A Musical, Tuesday, December 18th, 2001 at the State Theater, 719 Congress Avenue. All proceeds from that evening's performance of this holiday-themed production will benefit the Austin History Center Association. Based on O. Henry's best-loved story, The Gifts of the Magi is a perfect fit for the Association and Austin. William Sydney Porter (also known as O. Henry) made Austin his home for twelve years, from 1885 to 1887, and the Austin History Center houses a renowned collection of his materials donated in 1982 by the late Judge Trueman O'Quinn. In addition to several pieces of Porter's furniture, the collection includes first and special editions, handsome sets, biographies, anthologies, manuscripts, photographs, and other valuable O. Henry materials. The benefit includes a festive reception in the lobby of the recently restored historic State Theater at 6:30 p.m., and the curtains open at 7:30 p.m. Register during the reception for door prizes including a gift certificate courtesy of Jeffrey's Restaurant, AHCA memberships, and Waterloo Press publications. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased over the telephone by calling (512) 974-7383 or (512) 974-7499 or in person at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe Street. The Austin History Center Association is a nonprofit citizen's group formed to support the Austin History Center, the local history archives of the Austin Public Library. ###
