City of Austin Switches to
new 974/972 Phone Prefix
The City will be changing two major components of its telephone infrastructure: COA telephone numbers have moved from the 499 to the 974 exchange. This unified telephone numbering plan is designed to make it easier for customers to locate and identify City telephone numbers instead of trying to decipher the variety of prefixes the City used until now.
The Austin Public Library numbers that were 499 have changed to the 974 exchange. These numbers include the Faulk Central Library, the Austin History Center, Cepeda Branch, and Library Administration . Key numbers for all divisions of the Library are in the Southwestern Bell Blue Pages, part of telephone books being delivered this month.
To better serve our customers the Austin Public Library has implemented one number—974-7400 to answer a variety of questions concerning: Austin information, current events/famous people, directory assistance, and much more. The Center will answer customer inquiries with fines/overdues, lost items, as well as, questions about library holdings, availability of books and materials, hours and locations. When in doubt dial the APL Telephone Information Center at 974-7400.
974 Exchange: COA telephone numbers that began with 499, 404, 462, 433, or 505 now begin with 974. When you dial these prefixes, the calls are routed to the 974 prefix. This permissive-dial conversion program will remain operative through December 2001. All COA departments except Health and Water/Wastewater retained the last four digits of their telephone numbers. For example, the number for the Security Office at Faulk Central Library converted from 499-7401 to 974-7401.
972 Exchange: Health and Water/Wastewater is moving to the 972 exchange in December 2001, but they will not keep the last four digits of their current numbers. They will be getting entirely new numbers.
