Book lovers and bargain hunters will make tracks to the Crockett Center, 6301 Hwy 290 East, on September 14–15, 2002, for the Friends of the Austin Public Library’s Monster Book Sale. The annual event, which offers more than 60,000 books, magazines, videos, CDs and computer software for readers of all ages, raises money for the Austin Public Library. Most books are $1 to $2. Past sales raised as much as $65,000 for equipment and special programs at the Library.
Books and other library materials for the Monster Book Sale come from the Library’s withdrawn materials or are donated by individuals. A special selection of rare and exceptional books featuring first editions, art books and unusual collector’s items will be auctioned at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Members of the Friends of the Austin Public Library are invited to a special preview sale Friday, September 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Memberships can be purchased or renewed at the door.
Book carts are in limited supply. Serious shoppers should bring a wagon or luggage cart, or any convenient method of moving bags and boxes of books to checkout.
The Friends of the Austin Public Library is a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers and financial support for the Library. The book sale is run entirely by volunteers who work year-round sorting and organizing materials for the sale.
Individuals or groups interested in helping with the book sale should contact the Volunteer Services Office, Austin Public Library, at 974-7443.
