Austin Public Library Commemorates Patriot Day, September 11

TerrazasExterior

In recognition of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 the Austin Public Library Youth Services team will host several programs for children. As the community remembers the first anniversary of the dark day that shook America, children who recall the events may need additional help understanding how such a terrible thing could happen. Over the past twelve months, children have continued to hear about, see, or experience increased security, panic, and violence that are a direct result of the terrorist acts. Books and special programs can help them cope with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty and bring hope back into their lives.

The following special programs, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled to commemorate the anniversary of September 11 or Patriot Day, as we now call this day:

Tuesday, September 10, 2002, 3:30 p.m. at the Southeast Austin Community Branch, 5803 Nuckols Crossing Road hosts Austin Storyteller Carl Anderson presenting “Heroes Come In All Sizes.”

Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at the Twin Oaks Branch, 2301 S. Congress Ave. hosts Community Helper Program presented by Austin EMS. The 911 Simulator Program with Red E. Fox teaches young children how to dial 911.

Thursday, September 12, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at the Riverside Drive Branch, 2410 E. Riverside Drive hosts Community Helper Program presented by Austin EMS. The 911 Simulator Program with Red E. Fox teaches young children how to dial 911.

Saturday, September 14, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe Street hosts local Austin Storyteller Bernadette Nason presenting “Kings, Cats, Kindness and Courage.”

Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. at the Southeast Austin Community Branch, 5803 Nuckols Crossing host Community Helper Program presented by Austin EMS. Youth ages 5 and up will get an opportunity to see the inside of an ambulance and take part in a safety program.
