Teen Read Week—Get Graphic @ Your Library October 13-19, 2002

Graphic Novel Artwork

This year's Teen Read Week theme, Get Graphic @ your library,™ celebrates the popularity of graphic novels with teens and encourages teens to read for the fun of it and choose for themselves the books that interest them.

Teen Read Week is celebrated October 13 -19 in school and public libraries and bookstores across the country. Teens can visit any of the 21 Austin Public Library locations and pick up a graphic novel of their choice and read just for the fun of it.

Recently the Oak Springs and Southeast Austin Community Branches received grants from the Texas Book Festival to add graphic novels to their collection. Titles include the Sandman series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batman, Superman, Battle Angel Alita, Gunsmith Cats, and many more.

Teen use of libraries is a growing trend in libraries—Austin Public Library is recognizing the trend and creating opportunities for teens in Austin libraries:

· Wired for Youth Centers have teen advisory boards that help decide everything from programming topics to books in the library to designing teen spaces.

· Austin Librarians are learning about and becoming experts in graphic novels.

· Wired for Youth Centers offer programs that mix the use of technology with books. This past year, more teens and preteens than ever before are using the library and its resources for homework, research, and for fun.

· Since the creation of the Wired for Youth Programs in 2000 more than 100,000 young people have used and participated in programs at the Wired for Youth Centers.

Now in its fifth year, Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative of YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The initiative is aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. The goals of the initiative are to give teens time to read for the fun of it, allow teens to select their own reading material, and help teens get in the habit of reading regularly and often.
