Writing Austin's Lives

Free Public Life-Writing Workshops

Writing Austin’s Lives, a writing contest and a community partnership project of the University of Texas Humanities Institute, is about creating a portrait of Austin in 2003 by gathering and sharing brief personal stories from every segment of our community. This is a chance for ordinary people to tell their stories.

Free public Life-Writing Workshop are scheduled in July at Austin Public Library locations:

*Wednesday, July 9, 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Howson Branch, 2500 Exposition,(512) 472-3584. Workshop will be led by Mary Elizabeth.

*Saturday, July 12, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the University Hills Branch, 4721 Loyola Lane,(512) 929-0551. Workshop will be led by Leslie Belile.

*Saturday, July 19, 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Windsor Park Branch, 5833 Westminster Dr.,(512) 928-0333. Workshop will be led by Rebecca Johnson.

*Tuesday, July 29, 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Faulk Central Library to be held at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe Branch, (512) 974-7400. Workshop will be led by Carolyn Scheider.

June Programs:

*Thursday, June 12, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Branch, 211 E. William Cannon Road, (512)441-7993. Workshop will be led by award-winning Austin poet, Valerie Bridgeman Davis.

*Saturday, June 21, 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Oak Hill Branch in Southwest Austin, 5125 Convict Hill Road,(512) 892-6680. Workshop will be led by Susie Flatau.

The workshops are designed to help you get started on your submission.

Written contributions will be celebrated in many ways—through performances, displays, prizes, and by possible inclusion in a book Writing Austin’s Lives: A Community Portrait. Come prepared to share your Austin story--no writing experience is necessary. Writing materials will be provided.
