HOLES Discussion Group Kick-Off with Mayor Will Wynn
Over the summer Austinites were invited to participate in the second annual Mayor's Book Club by reading the award winning novel Holes by local Austin author Louis Sachar. Since the launch in April 2003 the community has overwhelmingly responded to the invitation and Holes has been checked out over 3,800 times at local libraries. Now, in partnership with the University of Texas Humanities Institute and the mayor's office the Library will kick-off discussion groups based on various themes from the book. Holes is a lively comic adventure story with quirky characters that readers of all ages can enjoy. The book raises many thoughtful questions for discussion: How do children view the adult world, and how do adults care-or fail to care-for children? How does the past live on in the present? How do myths and legends shape our everyday realities? So, read Holes and come talk about it with your neighbors in August and September.
The first book discussion group is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howson Branch, 2500 Exposition of the Austin Public Library. Mayor Will Wynn will launch the book discussion schedule and Evan Carton, Director of the University of Texas Humanities Institute will facilitate the first evening group discussion.
An evening with the author
As the finale event of this year's Mayor's Book Club the Austin Public Library in partnership with the Austin PARKS Foundation will present the movie Holes as part of the Time Warner Cable Movies in the Park at Republic Square Park at 4th and Guadalupe Street. This event is made possible with special assistance by Alamo Drafthouse. On Wednesday, October 1 the public will have an opportunity to meet the author of the book and screenplay, Louis Sachar at 7:00 p.m. The movie will begin at 8:00 p.m. Bring your blankets and chairs and enjoy this free family event!
