About Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, America honors the many contributions Hispanic Americans have made and continue to make to our nation by observing National Hispanic Heritage Month. Initiated by the U.S. Congress as Hispanic Heritage Week more than 20 years ago, the celebration has grown and expanded to a month in 1989. It is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
