Using Graphic Novels to Promote Literacy with Preteens and Teens

On Wednesday, December 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30p.m. at the Yarborough Branch, 2200 Hancock Drive of the Austin Public Library, Michele Gorman, one of the leading experts on graphic novels will present a program about her new book, Getting Graphic!:Using Graphic Novels to Promote Literacy with Preteens and Teens. Are Comic books—a thing of the past? Not according to the multitude of youth who are purchasing and reading them! Linworth Publishing Inc. is providing help to those who must answer this demand with this new book. These colorful fantasy voyages are back and better than ever! A book sale and signing will occur before and after the 5:00 p.m. program. The Friends of the Austin Public Library will sponsor this free event, and the public is invited to attend. Graphic novels cover a variety of genres, address current and relative issues for teens, stimulate young imaginations, and engage reluctant readers. This valuable and timely resource includes an overview of the history of comic books and graphic novels, a “plain english” glossary to help readers decipher terms used in graphic novel publishing, as well as a list of recommended graphic novel titles for a core collection. This one-of-a-kind book serves as an introductory guide to the graphic novel format.
About the Author
Michele Gorman is a Wired for Youth librarian at the Austin Public Library in Austin, Texas. Gorman was featured in School Library Journal in 2002 for her work with graphic novels and their appeal to adolescents. She was also selected by Library Journal as one of the “Movers and Shakers” for 2003 in the library profession.
