Celebrate Texas Writers @APL
May is Texas Writers Month and the Austin Public Library has put together a program to celebrate children’s writers in Texas. "This is a wonderful opportunity to spread awareness about Texas Writers and in particular the talented writers living in Austin," says Jeanette Larson, Youth Services Manager, Austin Public Library.
On Wednesday, May 5 at the Yarborough Branch 2200 Hancock Drive meet Elizabeth Scanlon; author of A Sock is a Pocket for Your Toes. She will read from her book and involve children and parents in a craft activity. A Sock Is a Pocket for Your Toes: A Pocket Book is a whimsical story full of bells and balloons, ice cream and mud, giggles and hugs. Elizabeth Scanlon's delightful verse is captured in Robin Preiss Glasser's energetic artwork, which follows four families through a busy day exploring the surprising ins and outs of the world's pockets. This special book will leave readers young and old with pockets full of joy! Liz received a degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and a graduate degree in English-Creative Writing from the University of Texas – Austin. Liz enjoyed a year as Michener fellow, has taught English at Austin Community College, and currently writes corporate marketing communications from home. In Austin for more than a decade now, Liz is married and has two small girls.

Next in the Library’s celebration of Texas writers is Lindsay Lane, author of Snuggle Mountain. Lindsay will appear at APL’s ongoing Bilingual Storytime at Highland Mall 6001 Airport Blvd. On Saturday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. she will read from her book in both English and Spanish. Snuggle Mountain is a book about breakfast. Emma wants pancakes, but the two-headed giant who lives on Snuggle Mountain has forgotten all about breakfast. So lump by bump, Emma begins her climb up the shaking, quaking mountain to reach the giant’s snuggly cave. How can Emma wake the giant without getting caught in the Sleeping Spell? Filled with imagination and humor, Snuggle Mountain perfectly captures a quintessential childhood experience. The program is for children of all ages.
