The "Cepeda Music Garden" a Public Art Project to Honor East Side Music Legends Gets Underway

Today at a press conference Council Member Raul Alvarez and Council Member Danny Thomas unveil the plans for an East Austin Music Project to honor and recognize notable people and places associated with East Austin’s music scene. As the self-proclaimed "Live Music Capital of the World," there is no question that music is a defining element of Austin's culture. Council Member Alvarez and Council Member Thomas are proposing to create an art project recognizing many who lived and/or performed on the East side of town. People like Alfred Johnson, James Cotton, TD Bell, Ruben & Alfonso Ramos, Roy Montelongo, and Agustine Ramirez. Places like the Victory Grill, Charlie’s Playhouse, the Skyline Club and the Avalon Club are similarly important because they hosted these local music legends as well as other legendary artists that toured the country. There is a great need to recognize and preserve East Austin’s musical legacy, because we are quickly losing this incredible knowledge about our Community's past.
The Cepeda Branch, at 651 N. Pleasant Valley Road, of the Austin Public Library located in East Austin presents a great opportunity to recognize East Austin's rich musical legacy through the creation of the "Cepeda Music Garden." This project will not only serve the purpose of recognizing important members of the community but also of improving the aesthetic appeal of the entryway and fencing surrounding the library. This project will be funded partially from government sources but a majority of the funding will be raised from private contributions and in-kind donations. The Austin Public Library Foundation will act as the fiscal sponsor to manage the funds raised until the goals are met and the project is ready for design and construction. The project plans and comments cards will be on display at the Cepeda Branch—the Council Members welcome your input and suggestions on this project. The project plans were designed by Cotera+Reed Archictects.
