Faulk Central Library and the Austin History Center
are closed December 16, 2004 through January 1, 2005

The John Henry Faulk Central Library and the Austin History Center of the Austin Public Library located at 8th and Guadalupe Streets are closed Thursday, December 16 through Saturday, January 1 to complete two projects that will enhance the delivery of service to customers. Both facilities will reopen on Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 12 noon.

The Austin History Center is closed for the installation of much needed adjustable compact shelving. This additional shelving will allow the Austin History Center to accommodate additional archival material which will make the collection more accessible to staff and customers. The shelving was donated to the Austin History Center Association by one of Austin's law firms, Graves, Dougherty, Hearon, & Moody. Additionally, through a grant from the Friends of the Austin Public Library, transportation and installation costs of the shelving was made possible. The addition of this shelving will enable the Austin History Center to grow their collection of materials from Austin and Travis County. Materials include books photographs, maps, newspapers, personal and family archives, and ephemera documenting Austin's history from before its founding in 1839 to present. "Preserving the history of the community will enable future generations to understand and connect their lives to the past," says Susan Soy, Austin History Center Manager. The Austin History Center archives provide a valuable record of how ideas and community goals have prospered and changed over time in Travis County.

The John Henry Faulk Central Library is closed to allow staff to re-label item bar codes on materials so that a self check-out system can be installed. A self check-out machine will allow customers to check out their own materials, thus avoiding waiting in line. The Central Library has over 400,000 items in its collection. The Austin Public Library has six branch libraries that have already implemented self check-out systems. The system has been well received by customers. Self check-out machines have been successfully implemented in public libraries nationwide.

The book drop at Faulk Central Library remains open during this time period. Books may be returned to any Austin Public Library location. For interim library service in the area please visit the branches closest to the Faulk Central Library; Twin Oaks, 2301 S. Congress; Howson, 2500 Exposition; Carver, 1161 Angelina Street; and Ruiz,1600 Grove Blvd. For Sunday, December 19 when the Faulk Central Library will be closed visit the Little Walnut Creek, 835 W. Rundberg Ln; Manchaca Road, 5500 Manchaca Road; and/or the Carver, 1161 Angelina Street, Branches. The Telephone Reference Center at 974-7400 remains open Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. For additional information please call (512) 974-7528 or visit the Web at www.cityofaustin.org/library.
