Austin Public Library Wins Texas Book Festival Grants
At the end of April during the annual conference of the Texas Library Association the 2005 Texas book Festival grant recipients were announced. The Austin Public Library is one of 50 Texas libraries receiving grants. The Texas Book Festival has surpassed the $1.8 million mark in total grant funds awarded to Texas public libraries since its inception in 1996. In Austin, two branch libraries of the Austin Public Library received two separate grants to purchase materials to enhance their collections. “We are thrilled to be able to support Texas libraries and the invaluable services that they provide to the citizens of this state,” said Mary Herman, Festival Director. “At a time when funding for libraries continues to be cut on an annual basis, the grants that the Texas Book Festival provides become even more critical in supporting our libraries in their efforts to promote reading and literacy in Texas.”
The Carver Branch located in east Austin received $2,500 to purchase reference books and tutorials on CD and video to help customers learn technology, such as MS applications, Internet research techniques and website design. The Windsor Park Branch located in northeast Austin received a $2,500 grant to purchase fiction and non-fiction titles to build up their youth collection. Since 1996 the Austin Public Library has been awarded 14 Texas Book Festival grants which have greatly enhanced the collections in branch libraries across the city of Austin.
