"LOL @ your library®" during Teen Read Week™ 2007
Austin Public Library Releases Schedule of Activities for Teens During
October 14-20, 2007

Teen Read Week 2007

Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as Austin Public Library (APL) celebrates the tenth annual Teen Read Week(TM), October 14 – 20, 2007. APL joins thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, "LOL @ your library®." Teen Read Week(TM) is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association. This year’s theme encourages teens to read humorous books and graphic novels just 'for the fun of it'.

Teen Librarians at APL offer these ideas to teens and their parents:
  • Make time to read for the fun of it
  • Use their local library to discover their interests
  • Get reading materials and participate in events at their school or public library

Heath Rezabek, Teen Services Manager, feels that "today’s teens seem to have less and less free time, and there are increasingly more activities for them to take part in during what little leisure time they have. That is why it’s important to encourage teens to set aside some time to read."

This year the Austin Public Library has put together a range of fun activities for teens to literally “LOL, laugh out loud” at their library! In addition to the special programs planned for Teen Read Week™, area teens will have an opportunity to participate in a nationwide contest for selecting the “teen choice list” Teens are invited to stop by their library and vote for their favorites from a list of Top Ten Teen picks, as well as, adding their favorites to a library book display.
