European Movie Night Series: Life Under Communist Rule @ Spicewood Springs Branch

The Austin Public Library proudly presents the European Movie Night Series: Life Under Communist Rule at 6:00 p.m. Wednesdays, June 11 – August 6 at the Spicewood Springs Branch, 8637 Spicewood Springs Rd. You don’t have to be a cinefile to enjoy these thought provoking and poignant films which comment on the complexities of life under Communist rule. Each film will be preceded by a short introduction by Vera Labriola who is from the Czech Republic and spent a majority of her life under Communist rule. Vera will briefly explain the relevant circumstances concerning production and setting of each film. Free and open to the public. Fireman's Ball

The Firemen’s Ball (Czechoslovakia 1967, Not Rated) June 11 at 6 pm
The Fireman's Ball is a satirical comedy about a small town's fireman's ball where nothing goes as planned. It is directed by Milos Forman, an auteur of popular American movies such as Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This film became a milestone in Czech "New Wave" and was nominated for an Academy Award.



The Lives of Others

The Lives of Others (Germany 2006, Rated R) July 2 at 6 pm
In the mid-80’s, Captain Wiesler works as a wiretapping expert with the Stasi (East German Secret Police). Wiesler becomes disillusioned with his life in the former socialist republic when his latest assignment, playwright Georg Dreyman, starts to challenge his beliefs through his overheard conversations.




No Man's Land

No Man’s Land (Bosnia-Herzegovina 2001, Rated R) August 6 at 6 pm
No Man’s Land takes place in Bosnia-Herzegovina during 1993 at the time of the heaviest fighting between the two sides. Two soldiers from opposing sides in the conflict become trapped in no man’s land, while a third soldier becomes a living booby trap. When a U.N. peacekeeper tries to help, the international press gets involved and complicates the entire situation.
