Bibliofiles Win Silver at the Library Book Cart Drill Team World Championship
Click to watch the News 8 story about the Bibliofiles.
The Austin Public Library Bibliofiles won the Silver Book Cart Award on June 29, 2008 for their phenomenal performance at the Library Book Cart Drill Team World Championship at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. This award comes on the heels of their first place victory at the State competition at the Texas Library Association (TLA) Annual Conference in April.
The American Library Association created the Book Cart Drill Team World Championship in 2005. The drill teams consist of three to fifteen library staff members that march in formation with stylized book carts and perform routines. Each team performs up to 4 minutes. Book cart drill teams appeared 25 years ago and have soared to popularity in the last few years. In a world of digital information, these drill teams hope to increase library awareness and do away with the outdated stodgy librarian stereotype.
In their Library Book Cart Drill Team World Championship award winning performance, the APL Bibliofiles march to a military cadence in precise formations until the routine makes a sharp turn for pure fun. Pop music with a sultry voiced female singer coupled with the Bibliofiles use of sign language spoofs the virtues of being a librarian. The lighthearted presentation brings laughter and joy to the audience and extols a Helen Keller quote, "Literature is my Utopia!"
The first place Gold Cart Award went to a provocative performance by the Well Stacked Sci-brarians from Santa Monica. They initially appear as mad scientists who mix and drink a bubbly potion before stripping their lab coats and reanimating as hollow faced zombies lurching to the tune of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
