Meet the Author Don Miles

Don Miles

On Monday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. meet the author of Cinco de Mayo Don Miles at the Austin History Center of the Austin Public Library, 810 Guadalupe St. in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15. Join Miles for a discussion of Mexican Independence Day called Diez y Seis de Septiembre. In Miles’ book Cinco de Mayo, he explains that September 16 and not May 5 is Mexican Independence Day and gives an historical account of the events that transpired on Cinco de Mayo. He also explores why the Cinco de Mayo holiday has become more popular in the United States than in Mexico. Miles’ inspiration for the book came mainly from his late wife, Dr. Minerva González-Angulo Miles. Minerva grew up in the neighborhood at the base of Chapultepec Hill in Mexico City, where the Emperor Maximilian’s castle still stands. She would often visit the castle and view the portrait of the emperor and empress whose story is featured in Cinco de Mayo. The discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information please call 512-974-7400 or visit www.cityofaustin.org/library.
