Spring 2009 Gaming @ APL

Gaming at APL

Games allow your mind to stretch and play. Compete in the Guitar Hero Tournament or play your favorite games on the Nintendo Wii, PS2, and Game Cube at the Austin Public Library. Each gaming event offers a "reading corner" with a wide variety of materials that will appeal to gamers: cheat code books, gaming magazines, books about careers in game design, graphic novels and manga. The gaming sessions are suggested for youth ages 10 to 17. This program is free and open to the public. For more information please call 512-974-7400 or visit www.cityofaustin.org/library.

Why Gaming at the Library?
Gaming events entice an under served demographic, namely teenage boys, to come back to the Austin Public Library. Events like our tournaments and free play nights give the Library an opportunity to show that we have many different kinds and formats of materials and services that are relevant to everyone's interests. Other programs for teens at the library include: book clubs, computer classes (learn how to design your own games), and zine workshops.

History of Gaming at the Austin Public Library
Gaming Tournaments started at APL in the Spring of 2007 as a teen services program with free play gaming nights featuring Dance Dance Revolution, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart. In the summer of 2007, the Austin Public Library hosted a very successful Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament on Nintendo Game Cube at the University Hills and Windsor Park branches with 50 to 60 people in attendance at each event.
