THE SWITCH TO DIGITAL TELEVISION

A Central Library Research Guide

June 12, 2009 is the deadline for all local broadcasters to switch to a digital broadcast. After this deadline (and, in some areas, before this deadline) analog television sets will no longer be receiving signals. If you use an antenna (or "rabbit ears") to watch television, or if you do not pay for cable or satellite services, you WILL NOT be able to watch TV using your television after June 12, 2009.

The switch to digital television is upon us. This switch will help free up valuable airwaves used for emergency communications, and provide viewers with an enhanced viewing experience including better sound and picture quality. You can make a smooth transition to digital television if you follow the steps outlined below. Three options are available to analog television owners:

  1. Purchase a digital converter box. Converter box coupons worth $40 are available to the public. One household may apply for up to two coupons; however, two coupons cannot be applied to the purchase of one converter box (i.e. only one coupon for one converter box). Converter boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70. To apply for converter box coupons you can:
    1. Apply online here
    2. Call the 24-hour coupon hotline at 1-888-388-2009; 1-877-530-2634 (English/TTY); or 1-866-495-1161 (Spanish/TTY)
    3. Mail a coupon application to: P.O. Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000
    4. Fax a coupon application to 1-877-388-4632.

  2. Subscribe to a cable or satellite service.
  3. Purchase a digital television.

The last two options may not be possible for many, and are certainly not required to continue watching television. However, only a limited number of digital converter box coupons are available. Applying for a coupon as soon as possible will insure that you will not get stuck with one of the more expensive options. After you have applied, you may expect to receive the coupon via postal mail.

Best Buy, Circuit City, RadioShack, and Wal-Mart are the retailers where the coupons may be used. These retailers have multiple locations in the Austin area and you can find a location near you here by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and typing in your address. Here you can find a list of converter box brands the coupon may be used to purchase.
