Place 3 City Council race heads to June 11 runoffFor immediate releaseMay 7, 2005 Two Austin City Council races were decided Saturday, May 7, 2005, but one position will be going to a June 11 runoff. The initiative to restrict smoking in public places was approved and goes into effect Sept. 1, 2005 (Download Ordinance). Winning positions on the City Council were Lee Leffingwell in Place 1 and incumbent Betty Dunkerley in Place 4. Dunkerley will be serving her second term. The Place 3 runoff will be between Margot Clarke and Jennifer Kim. Incumbents Daryl Slusher in Place 1 and Mayor Pro Tem Jackie Goodman in Place 3 both decided not to seek re-election. Place 4 Total votes cast were 70,178 or 14.29 percent of registered voters. Early voting for the runoff will be May 25-June 7. Canvassing of the May 7 vote will be 10:30 a.m. May 17 at Austin City Hall.
