The original land on which Metz Recreation Center is located was acquired by a bond purchase in 1933. The existing facility was built in 1972 through matching funds from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and Model Cities funds. Recreation Facilities at Metz include game rooms, kitchen, lighted ball field, hillside and stage area, wading pool, tennis court and playscape.
In 1978, Martin Junior High facilities were acquired as a satellite facitlity. Satellite facilities adjacent to Festival Beach include indoor regulation gym, tennis courts and lighted ball fields. In 1982, Austin voters gave approval for the expansion of facilities through the Capital Improvements Program.
Programs offered at Metz Recreation Center are a wide variety for both youth and adults. Programs include arts and crafts, sports, workshops, after-school tutoring, cooking and karate. Adult programs include weight-training, sports leagues, ceramics and special workshops. Annual special events include the KVUE Community Picnic, Menudo and Salsa Cook Off, Thanksgiving Community Dinner, Kids Holiday Party and Easter Egg Hunt. Call the center for days and times.
Senior program are also held at the center each day from 9am - 1pm with the Senior Luncheon program providing lunch served from 12 noon - 12:30pm, Monday through Friday.
