Summer is all about having fun, and so is the Summer Playground Program.
2008 marks the 81st Summer Playground Program of the Austin
Parks and Recreation Department.
The program offers a wide variety of recreation activities to children
K thru 5th grade and 12-15 years old, and it's all
free! With neighborhood sites throughout the city, Playground Leaders create
safe, supervised and fun-filled environments with activities including sports,
games, arts and crafts, nature activities and cook-outs.
This year's theme, p3 - Play, Pride and Prosper!, will encourage all youth to adopt healthy behaviors through regular physical fitness and selecting proper food choices. All Sites will be implementing an active play component a minimum of 1-hour each playground day to the youth who are registered for the program and providing information on the selection of healthy food choices.
The program begins, Monday, June 9th at 9am and ends; Friday, July 25th at 3pm. Normal hours of operation for most sites are Monday through Thursday,
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 10:00
a.m. - 5:00 p.m. All Sites will be closed July 4th. Pre-registration is not required, just register
at the site on your child's first day. The Summer Playground Program is designed to provide "drop-in" activities for children and is not a substitute for day camp or childcare.
There is always something going on at a Summer Playground site; it may be a hot game of box hockey or a cool water balloon fight. In addition to the activities that happen everyday, the Summer Playground Program enjoys a rich tradition of annual,
special events including, Opening ceremonies, Chalk Art Contest, Wacky Games, and Closing Ceremonies.
The Summer Playground Program offers even more than a fun time, it fosters self-esteem and
friendships and provides participants with positive and caring role models. Also, it lets parents
feel good about sending their children to their neighborhood playground, knowing that there will be
adult supervision. Kids and parents agree, the Summer Playground Program is where it's at!
