The Tuner-Roberts Recreation Center, located just off 183 North in Northeast Austin, is a brand new 18,700 square-foot facility that will proudly open its doors May 31, 2008. The center is named after Dorothy Turner and Velma Roberts, who were two of Austin’s most effective civil rights activists. For over 25 years, Ms. Turner and Ms. Roberts founded and operated the Black Citizens Task Force. Individually, Dorothy Turner was awarded the Arthur L. Green Civil and Human Rights Award in 1992, and Velma Roberts, in 1981 received the Friends of VISTA Award for her struggles to help eliminate poverty.
Today, The Turner-Roberts Recreation Center features a 7,700 square-foot gymnasium, staff offices, locker rooms for both male and female participants, an arts and crafts room, a weight room, a computer room, a kitchen area, a multi-purpose room, a meeting room and a corridor art gallery.
An unusual and environmentally friendly trait that The Turner-Roberts Recreation Center features is renewable building materials, energy-efficient heating, and a northern and southern exposure building orientation to maximize energy savings.
Activities at the recreation center are offered year-round for children and adults and include: fitness programs, senior programs, and after-school and summer day camp programs. Classes also include tutoring for PSAT and ACT as well as sports clinics. Specific class information available on-line at:
