Downtown is unique in that it frequently hosts large crowd events with tens of thousands of participants and visitors. The Downtown Area Command boundaries are Mopac and IH-35 along Town Lake to the south, Mopac to 12th Street/Shoal Creek Boulevard to the west and 29th street to Dean Keeton to IH-35 to the north. The area includes the State Capital, 6th Street, the Warehouse District and the west campus of the University of Texas.

The Downtown Area is different from other area commands in that it has the only mounted unit and walking beat unit within the city. These units supplement the usual components of other area commands including patrol officers, motorcycle officers, area detectives and district representatives, and crime analysis.
