Hazardous Waste Disposal Program
For Small Businesses

Features

  • Collection from your facility
  • Recycling of chemicals, when possible
  • Wide variety of chemicals collected
  • Regular or one-time collection options

Eligibility

This City of Austin program is for businesses that qualify as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG), as defined by the EPA, that are located within Travis, Williamson, Bastrop or Hays County. A CESQG is either:

  • A small business that produces less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste a month or
  • A small business with a one-time disposal of less than 2,000 pounds.

Goals

This program was set up to help businesses dispose of waste in a proper yet cost effective manner. It has become increasingly difficult and costly for small businesses to find a waste hauler to dispose of hazardous materials. We want to ensure hazardous materials are being disposed of properly and reduce the accumulation of these materials in the landfills.

What We Take

While there are some “exotic” and dangerous chemicals this program will not collect, the overwhelming majority of chemicals can be collected. Other materials which cannot be collected include used tires, air conditioning units and ammo/explosives. The majority of materials fall into several groups: paints, flammable materials and corrosive materials.

What Happens to the Chemicals

All materials collected will be properly transported to our facility where a contracted hazardous waste hauler transports the waste to the appropriate facility. All possible means of recycling will be used. Good quality latex paint will be converted to primer paint and given to charities if possible. Most flammable material is collected and sent out to areas where it can be used for its BTU value.
