Magazines
Pay-As-You-Throw customers can recycle magazines by putting them in their Single Stream Recycling cart with other recyclables.
If you are not a Pay-As-You-Throw customer, consult your waste company or building manager about whether to put magazines in your trash or in your recycling.
Ecology Action accepts paper at its downtown Austin recycling drop off center. You may also be able to donate magazines to branch libraries, doctor's offices, schools or nursing homes.
Margarine tubs
Margarine tubs or similar containers made of plastic #1 - #7 can be recycled in your Single Stream Recycling cart.
Mattresses
Pay-As-You-Throw customers can set mattresses and box springs out during their bulky item collection. Please place the mattresses with other non-metal items.
You may be able to dispose of mattresses at local landfills for a fee.
Medical waste
Please call Solid Waste Services at 494-9400 to find out how to safely dispose of medical waste such as needles, syringes, and blood-soaked items.
Microwaves
Pay-As-You-Throw customers can set microwaves out during their bulky item collection.
You may be able to dispose of microwaves at local landfills for a fee.
If your microwave is in good condition, you may also be able to donate it to a charitable organization or thrift store.

Milk cartons
Solid Waste Services cannot recycle paper milk cartons or similar containers. Please put these items in your trash.
Milk jugs
Pay-As-You-Throw customers can recycle plastic milk jugs made from plastic #1 - #7 at the curb. Put them in your Single Stream Recycling cart with other recyclables.

Mirrors
Solid Waste Services cannot recycle mirrors at the curb. Please box mirrors or wrap them in several layers of newspaper and label the package "GLASS." Place the package in your garbage cart.
Mortar
Solid Waste Services cannot collect mortar. You may be able to dispose of mortar at local landfills for a fee.
Motor oil
Residents of the City of Austin and Travis County may take household quantities of motor oil and oil filters free of charge to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe disposal. Do not mix motor oil with other automotive fluids.
Motor oil can also be recycled at a number of locations around town.
Motor oil bottles
Solid Waste Services cannot recycle motor oil bottles at the curb no matter what type of plastic they are made from. Please put empty bottles in your trash.
Motorcycles
Solid Waste Services cannot collect motorcycles or any item with a title of ownership during bulky item collection. Please contact a junk yard to dispose of a motorcycle.
