- Bridging the Digital Divide -
What is the Digital Divide? The term 'digital divide'
referrs to the gap between those people have and know how to use technology
(such as computers and the Internet) and those who do not. Generally,
the digital divide exists between lines of education, economic class,
location (rural/urban), age, and race.
Grant for Technology Opportunities Program (GTOPs)
Created by the Austin Telecommunications Commission and administered by
the City Staff at the Telecommunications
and Regulatory Affairs Office, the Grant for Technology Opportunities
Program (GTOPs) provides money to Austin organizations and citizen's groups
organizations for projects focusing on digital opportunities and bridging
the digital divide.

- Multimedia, Interactive and Creative Technology Development -
As the City develops its Multimedia Planning
process, the Commission has recommended utilizing Australia's "Multimedia
Victoria 21" Program as a template for Austin's Multimedia
Program. The commission hopes that by identifying some key
programs to template community and industry needs (development, utilization,
training, ...), we will be able to further showcase multimedia opportunities
in Austin, Texas.
- New Technology-
The Commission is always interested in hearing about new
technology and its possible impacts on the City of Austin.
Wi-Fi in Austin
Telecommunications Commissioner Chip Rosenthal gave a presentation
to the Commission (03/12/03) on Wi-Fi, detailing his thoughts on
why it is right for Austin. Groups like Austin
Wireless are helping to push Wi-Fi (wireless networking) Technology
in Austin.
