Town Lake Animal Center:
Coyote Management Progress Report Summary
February 2005

3-1-1 Information

Wildlife Services and the city of Austin Animal Control personnel utilized citizen coyote complaints collected through 3-1-1 call information to identify high priority areas for managing coyote that exhibit aggressive behavior in suburban and urban environments in Austin and unincorporated areas of Travis County. The area located between Highway 360 and Highway 1 (MoPac) south to Lake Austin (Colorado River) comprised approximately 65% of the total 3-1-1 coyote calls received between November 19, 2004 and January 27, 2005 (Sightings 11/04-2/2005 (PDF file)).

Education

Wildlife Services has provided educational materials to 150 individuals that have reported coyote observations from January 1 through March 1, 2005. In addition, the Wildlife Services biologist has provided oral presentations to 150 individuals attending meetings sponsored by 6 home owners associations and/or civic organizations. Presentations included information on preventing and alleviating conflicts with coyote in suburban and urban environments.

Coyote Removal

Wildlife Services initiated coyote removal in the high priority area north of Far West on January 13, 2004, and removed a total of 6 coyotes. The coyotes removed were captured on both public and private lands within 2 - 5 blocks of Anderson High School and/or Hill Elementary School.

Wildlife Services initiated trapping in the high priority area south of Far West on February 3, 2005, and removed a total of 5 coyotes from Travis County's Allen Park. Since the initiation of trapping, there have been no further 3-1-1 complaint calls reporting aggressive coyote behavior within the area north of 2222 between Highway 360 and Highway 1 (See Comparison Maps of Coyote Reports FY 2003 and FY 2004 (PDF file) and 3-1-1 Call Data (Excel file)). Wildlife Services will continue to monitor the 3-1-1 call database for reports of aggressive coyote behavior, and will resume trapping in the area north of 2222 if the 3-1-1 database indicates a renewal of observations / complaints.

All coyotes were captured in live restraining devices and averaged around 34 pounds with a maximum weight of 43 pounds and a minimum weight of 25 pounds. All coyotes were humanely killed using techniques recommended in the American Veterinary Medical Association 2000 Report on Euthanasia.
