Town Lake Animal Center:
How You Can Help

Volunteer

Town Lake Animal Center relies on teams of trained, responsible volunteers to provide extra care and services to our human and animal customers. We have volunteer opportunities for adults and for children, with the help of their parents.

Some volunteer work involves direct, hands-on work with animals

at the shelter, and some is support work, like stuffing envelopes, working "behind the scenes" in our offices, or helping keep our grounds and gardens looking great. We also have opportunities for one-time projects, or for doing work for the shelter at home by collecting donations in your neighborhood, school, or church community.

Regular volunteers are expected to provide a minimum number of hours of service each month. All volunteers are required to attend an Orientation at the shelter and training sessions to prepare them to do their specific job. To help off-set the cost of administration and supplies, a donation is requested to participate in our regular volunteer program.

To find out more about our volunteer opportunities and the next Orientation session, send an e-mail to TLAC.volunteers@ci.austin.tx.us.

Donate

Town Lake Animal Center is a government agency, so our basic services are paid for with tax dollars. However, we always strive to provide more than basic service, and we rely on donations to make extra programs and resources available to our human and animal customers.

Monetary donations allow us to provide special care for injured and sick animals, toys and treats for the animals to help prevent boredom and stress, and programs designed to prevent animals from ending up homeless at the shelter.

Donations can be dropped off in any of the collection boxes at the shelter or they can be given to one of our staff members during business hours. You can also mail a check to:

In-kind donations help us to make the animals more comfortable and content while they are staying with us. We can always use the following items:

  • New or used towels or small blankets - please, no quilts or electric blankets
  • Newspapers
  • Tennis balls, Kong toys, and other sturdy, washable dog toys
  • Wand-type interactive cat toys
  • Washable, plastic, ball-type cat toys
  • Natural rawhide chews
  • Natural dog and cat treats
  • Quality canned cat and dog food
  • Note:
Donations of dry pet foods can be accepted, but most will not be used at the shelter-these will be passed on to the Austin Pet Food Bank to assist pet owners in need.

Spread the Word

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly.

Here are the basics:

  • Pets should always wear collars with current identification tags and be kept safely indoors or in a securely fenced yard.
  • When outside the yard, pets should be on a leash, controlled by a responsible person!
  • Cats are best off if kept indoors or carefully supervised and/or leashed when outdoors.
  • Pets need regular veterinary care, with check-ups every year.
  • Dogs MUST have some obedience training to be good pets and do best if they get plenty of exercise as well as time indoors with their human families.
  • Pets should be spayed or neutered! They’ll live longer, healthier lives and won’t accidentally add to our problem of too many cats and dogs.

Thanks for thinking of us!!
