Construction to Wastewater Pipe on Cesar Chavez Street to Begin Tuesday, June 16th
For Immediate Release – June 10, 2009
AUSTIN - The Austin Water Utility (AWU) will refurbish a 21-inch wastewater pipe beneath Cesar Chavez Street between Brazos Street
and I-35 beginning on Tuesday, June 16th. The scheduled work is expected to be complete on Tuesday, June 23rd.
The work will be performed by accessing existing manholes in Cesar Chavez Street allowing most traffic movement to continue. Water
and wastewater service to customers within the work zone will be unaffected.
Both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of Cesar Chavez Street will remain open during the project. Left turns onto Trinity
Street and Red River Street will be restricted at different times during the project. Equipment to support the work will be setup
north of Cesar Chavez Street on Colorado, Brazos and Red River streets.
The wastewater pipe will be refurbished by inserting a liner into the existing pipe. During the process wastewater will be diverted
through a temporary pipe. By using this trenchless method instead of removing and replacing the pipe, AWU will save approximately
one year in construction time, over one million dollars in cost and reduce the inconvenience to motorists.
