The video shows one of the Austin Water Utility’s wastewater lines being televised by its TV Inspection crews.
These TV Inspection crews perform routine inspections and cleaning of the Austin Water Utility’s wastewater collection
system, which consists of about 2500 miles of sanitary sewer lines.
This particular wastewater line was found clogged with excessive amounts of grease and solids which can cause a stop up
or back up of the line and eventually a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) if not removed properly.
These SSOs can cause significant damage to property and the environment, and are a serious threat to public health and
safety.
The City of Austin is currently under an EPA Administrative Order to eliminate these SSOs and it is important that we all
do our part to reduce the amount of fats, oils, and grease discharged into the City’s sanitary sewer system.
You can do your part by following some the simple do’s and don’ts described on the grease home page.
