Overflowing Manhole

A wastewater line clogged with excessive amounts of grease and solids can cause a stop up or back up of the line and eventually a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) such as the one shown in this picture if not removed properly.

These SSOs can cause significant damage to property and the environment, and are a serious threat to public health and safety.

The City of Austin is currently under an EPA Administrative Order to eliminate these SSOs and it is important that we all do our part to reduce the amount of fats, oils, and grease discharged into the City’s sanitary sewer system.
