Underground Ecosystems (Hosted by Texas Cave Management Association)
Though tours can't enter protected BCP caves inhabited by endangered species, you'll get the idea in
this chance to go underground. This guided tour of an area cave is an incredible opportunity to better understand
connections between ecosystems above and below ground, as well as an up close view of some of the layers of limestone
so important to our local springs and groundwater resources. While some of Central Texas' caves are large, such as
Inner Space Cavern, many like this one are smaller, more physically demanding and require some stooping and crawling.
However, the crawlways can reward with glimpses of unusual formations and cave inhabitants (if you're lucky).
Considerations:
Participants must be in reasonable physical condition for the required stooping and crawling
and a few tight turns. This is probably not an appropriate activity for those with joint or back problems or more
than 25 lbs. overweight. Participants will need to bring/wear long pants, clothing that can get very dirty and
closed-toe shoes, drinking water, and protective gloves. More specific information will be provided on an event
confirmation.
Limited to 16 individuals, Ages 8 and up.
