Why isn't [blank] toilet on the list?
The most common reasons a toilet doesn't appear on our rebate list:
- No testing data
- Inadequate flushing performance
- Uses an early-closing flapper
- Not locally available
What do those things mean?
No Testing Data-- Our rebate list uses third-party testing data to evaluate toilets. It is a manufacturer's responsibility to
submit a toilet for testing. Because of the expense involved, some manufacturers choose not to have toilets testing, or only test limited
configurations of their toilets. Believe it or not, test results can vary widely for the same toilet tank tested with a different bowl, or
vice versa, which is why we require testing data for all combinations. For instance, some manufacturers may submit Tank A matched with Bowl B (standard-height, round front) for testing, but fail to test Tank A
with Bowl C (taller, elongated version). In that case, we cannot offer rebates on the Tank A/Bowl C combination. [*Exception: If we can verify with the manufacturer that the only difference between a non-tested
and a tested combination is the placement of the handle or the color, we can consider a toilet for rebate. We will not waive the testing requirement for tanks/bowls of different sizes or heights (10" rough-in,
ADA version, different flapper, etc.)]
Flushing Performance-- To meet our rebate requirements, a toilet must receive a score of 250 or
better on the Maximum Performance (MaP) Test. That number correlates to the number of grams of waste a toilet can
flush effectively. The higher the number, the greater the flushing power of the toilet.
Early-Closing Flapper-- Some toilets save water by closing the flapper before the tank closes fully. These
flappers can easily (and accidentally) be replaced with a non-early closing flapper, causing the toilet to use an excess amount of water.
Only toilets that have a different flushing mechanism, with reliable and lasting savings, make our rebate list.
Local Availability-- Some toilets do meet our other criteria, but are not readily available in the Austin area. Because our customers tell us they don't want to search for a toilet that's
on our list but impossible to find, we only add manufacturers where we know of a local distributor. If you are considering special-ordering or ordering online a toilet that you think would meet our qualifications, please
call 974-2199 prior to purchase.
Wondering about a specific toilet?
We can usually tell you why a particular toilet does not qualify if you will email us or call 974-2199.
We do not list non-qualifying toilets on the web to avoid further confusion.
My toilet doesn't qualify -- is it a bad toilet?
Not necessarily. Many toilets with early-closing flappers can be great toilets... just be sure to replace the flapper with an early-closing model fitted for that particular brand,
not a universal replacement flapper. (You can help extend the life of your flapper by avoiding drop-in bowl cleansers.) Other toilets that have lower MaP test scores may work
perfectly well in some households, or in lighter-use areas.
My neighbor has a toilet on your list, and he doesn't like it.
We can't promise that the toilets on our list are perfect. As with any product, sometimes you get a lemon. If you believe your toilet has a manufacturing defect, please call the supplier or manufacturer.
Sometimes people are disappointed with flushing performance. These toilets are tested to flush solid matter; there is currently no way to accurately measure how well a toilet flushes other types of waste, or
how well it cleans the bowl.
