Overview
“It is the summer of 1979 and you are
visiting your grandparents who live near Mabel
Davis Park in
southeast
Austin. It has been raining all week and you are glad to finally
get out to the park. Before you reach the park, you notice a
dead
fish in the creek that flows through the park..."
Lesson 1: Movement of Water
Science Concepts: Study
factors
affecting movement of surface water: origin of water, topography,
watershed and flow paths.
Process: Investigate
factors affecting surface water movement, make predictions
and
describe experimental results.
TEKS: 1A, 2A, 2B,
2C, 3A, 3C, 4B, 6C, 11A, 14A, 14C
Lesson 2: Pollutant Investigation
Science Concepts:
Relate land use and water tests, point source and non-point source pollution, chemical toxicity,
biological magnification.
Process: Analyze
baseline quantitative data; perform simulated testing to
determine
contaminant. Identify key information to develop and use hypotheses.
TEKS: 1A, 2A, 2B,
2D, 4A, 4B, 6C, 11A, 14C
Lesson 3: Finding the Pollution Source
Science Concepts:
Pollutant concentration.
Process: Plan,
analyze and share data with other students. Explain unforeseen
outcomes. Perform simulated testing of pollutant levels. Revise
hypotheses.
TEKS: 1A, 2A, 2B,
2C, 2D, 11A
Lesson 4: The Clean Up Debate (optional)
Science Concepts:
Discuss policy issues, decision making strategies, debate and
question.
Process: Investigate
relationship between interests of various organizations
and
individuals and decision-making; develop debating and questioning
skills
TEKS: 2A, 2C, 2D,
3A, 4A
