Flood Control section
East 4th St. and Pedernales St. Project
East 4th St./Pedernales St. Storm Drain Improvements

The City of Austin has received many complaints of street and house flooding in the area between Chalmers Avenue and S. Pleasant Valley Road, generally along Diaz, Hidalgo, E. 2nd, 3rd and 4th streets. The flooding is caused by an old, inadequate storm drain system that does not have sufficient capacity during severe storms. The City of Austin has finished preliminary studies of flooding in this area and has developed a plan to improve the storm drain system in two phases.

Phase I received funding through the November 2006 bond elections. During this phase, the City proposes to install new underground pipes along Mildred, Diaz, Hildago, E. 3rd and E. 4th streets. It will take about a year to install the pipes with construction estimated to begin in early 2010. See map of proposed storm drain lines (376KB pdf).

Phase II has not received funding yet. It will include the installation of storm drains along other streets to relieve flooding for more houses and streets in the area.
