Water Permit Compliance
The purpose of
the Storm Water Permit Compliance program is to provide regulatory
guidance and documentation to the City of Austin program managers,
the public and regulatory agencies in order to ensure compliance with
state and federal regulatory requirements for water quality protection.
Compliance staff coordinate and track the activities mandated by Austin's
municipal separate storm water system (MS4) storm water permit, a
permit that regulates the discharges of storm water from the City's
storm sewer system. Staff provide guidance and oversight related to
the permit requirements, report on the City's compliance activities,
and coordinate with other MS4s in the area, such as the University
of Texas at Austin.
The City’s MS4 permit was originally issued by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) in September 1998, and it expired in
October 2003. The City worked with the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew the permit through the
Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) program
and was issued a final MS4 permit on February 22, 2006. This
permit shall expire five years from the date of issuance.
For additional information related the City’s TPDES
MS4 permit or other TPDES general permits, please contact the
TPDES Program Coordinator through the “Contact Us” links
