Mateo Scoggins

Mateo Scoggins,
Environmental Scientist - Team Leader

Mateo graduated from the University of California at San Diego in 1989 with a BA in Communications. He spent about four years in Honduras in the Peace Corps, working with water and solar energy. He started working with the City of Austin in 1993 and got an MS in Aquatic Biology from Texas State University in 2001. He focuses on the effective use of biological communities (bugs and algae) in assessing stream health, and is particularly fond of GIS and hydrology as tools to explain this messy data. email

Andrew Clamann
Andrew Clamann,
Environmental Scientist

Andrew graduated from UT (Austin) in 1995 with a BA in Biology and a Secondary Composite Science teaching certification. At the Brackenridge Field Lab, Andrew spent two years learning aquatic entomology (primarily Odonates). Andrew taught high school biology, environmental science and physical science for five years. He then spent five years as an environmental consultant in the private sector and half a year as an environmental inspector. Andrew is currently working on his Masters Degree at Texas State. His primary focus at the City of Austin is aquatic biology and wetland preservation. Andrew writes the annual EII Summary Reports as well as several other short reports. email

Todd Jackson

Todd Jackson,
Environmental Scientist Associate

Todd graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2001. Prior to moving to Austin he conducted arthropod bio-inventories of Texas Army National Guard training sites while working as a research assistant for UNT. He also worked for the Watershed Protection Division for the City of Denton, Texas. He is currently completing a Masters Degree through the University of North Texas. As a member of the Surface Water Team at the City of Austin, Todd's primary duties include the collection and identification of aquatic invertebrates for Surface Water Team projects and water quality monitoring of creeks and reservoirs within and around the city. His areas of interest also include invertebrate conservation, insect bio-geography and stream ecology. email

Mary Gilroy

Mary Gilroy,
Environmental Scientist

Mary has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology (1977) and Masters in Science Education (1983), both from UT Austin. She taught biology, chemistry and environmental science for nine years at Crockett High School, getting students involved as volunteer water quality monitors with the Lower Colorado River Authority's (LCRA) Colorado River Watch Network. In 1992, she left teaching to pursue a career in professional monitoring with LCRA, continuing to work with their volunteer network. She came to the City of Austin in 1998, where her responsibilities include water quality studies on Town Lake and Onion Creek. Since 1999, when the invasive aquatic plant hydrilla infested Lake Austin, a primary focus has been working with other partners (LCRA, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Friends of Austin) to develop and implement an integrated management plan for the lake. email

Heather Perry

Heather Perry,
Environmental Scientist Associate

Heather, originally from Louisiana where she started her college education, soon transferred to the University of North Texas to finish her Bachelor of Science in Biology (2000). While completing her undergraduate work, she took her first class on aquatic entomology. After taking a year off she started her graduate education at UNT and graduated with her Master of Science in Biology (stream ecology/aquatic entomology emphasis 2005). Her thesis focused on a spatulate-clawed mayfly (Camelobaetidius variabilis) from Honey Creek, Oklahoma. Before working as an Aquatic Biologist for the City, she worked as a Veterinary Technician for seven years. Her areas of interest include stream ecology, water conservation, aquatic entomology, benthic taxonomy, and native mussels (Unionidae). email

Staryn Wagner

Staryn Wagner,
Environmental Scientist Associate

Staryn graduated from Western Washington University in 2002 with a BS in Environmental Science and a focus on freshwater ecology. While studying in Bellingham, Washington he worked with Michael Hilles at the Institute for Watershed Studies under the lead of Robin A. Matthews. His duties there included water quality sampling of storm water catchments, streams, and Lake Whatcom as well as the accompanying lab analysis in the Institute's state certified water quality lab. While in school he developed a strong appreciation for GIS and has been using that resource to map, monitor and evaluate the regions and watersheds he studies. Upon returning to Texas and Austin in 2003 he spent several years working with Ion Art before finding his way to the Surface Water Team in the Watershed Protection Development and Review Department. email
