Mary
Gilroy,
Environmental Scientist
Mary has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology (1977) and Masters in
Science Education (1983), both from UT Austin. She taught biology,
chemistry and environmental science for nine years at Crockett
High School, getting students involved as volunteer water quality
monitors with the Lower Colorado River Authority's (LCRA) Colorado
River Watch Network. In 1992, she left teaching to pursue a career
in professional monitoring with LCRA, continuing to work with
their volunteer network. She came to the City of Austin in 1998,
where her responsibilities include water quality studies on Town
Lake and Onion Creek. Since 1999, when the invasive aquatic plant
hydrilla infested Lake Austin, a primary focus has been working
with other partners (LCRA, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department,
Friends of Austin) to develop and implement an integrated management
plan for the lake.
